The chances of getting pregnant, not only depends on the health of the woman and the time of intercourse during the menstrual cycle, but also on the health of the sperm of the male.

There are simple techniques you can follow to try to predict exactly when the egg is going to be in the right position and there are also ovulation kits available from drug stores and pharmacies to help to identify the best time in the menstrual cycle when conception is most likely to occur.
As females get older their chances of getting pregnant reduce, it is more difficult to become pregnant at for example 35 years of age than it is when you are in your 20’s, this is because women are more fertile in the early to mid-20’s, by the late 20’s fertility has begun to decline and around the age of 35 years the fertility rate starts to rapidly decline. This isn’t to say that you will be unable to conceive, it simply means that your chances of getting pregnant is reduced to on average 5%. Of course all women are different and some women are still able to conceive fairly easily into their mid-40’s.

You need to have sex in the days running up to ovulation. The egg will only survive for 24 hours once it has been released and there are high chances that you will not conceive just by having sex on that day. The good news is that the sperm can survive for up to five days – usually three – while inside the vagina/cervix. This means that to increase your chances of getting pregnant, you will need to have sex three to five days before ovulating so that the sperm is already there to meet the egg.
